The Dokkum Weigh House was built in 1754 as a butter weigh house, replacing an older building from 1593. Butter and cheese were weighed there.

Besides weighing goods, the building also housed a military guard on the south side. The gable stone with the inscription "weighs and watches" refers to this dual function.
The building has four Ionic pilasters with carved city arms and a bell dome. The north facade features the Dokkum coat of arms.
After the building lost its original function, it was used, among other things, as a fire station and accommodation for the tourist office.
