One of the few forest biotopes in Rheinhessen

Great, shady piece of forest, quite surprisingly between fields and vineyards!

Rheinhessen and thus also the Schwabenheim an der Selz district belongs geologically to the Mainz Basin. In the area between Worms and Bingen, strong earth crust movements have occurred since the beginning of the Tertiary around 70 million years ago. This allowed oceans to enter our space from the north and south. In many places, including the Pfauengrund, we find deposits of the tertiary freshwater sea that are 20 to 40 million years old. In the early Tertiary mostly clay marl was deposited - in the young tertiary mostly limestone. The clay marl tend to slip.
The stones are mined at various points for cement extraction. In the past, bricks, such as won in the Gewann Neuenberg between Schwabenheim and Elsheim.

A very nice stretch of the Pfauengrund, along the Sauerbach

Rheinhessen is the least forested area in Germany - there are at least a few trees along the Sauerbach
