In 1935 this stone altar and the oversized wooden cross were put up on the "velvet sleeve".

The forest owes its name to a legend in which the town councilors wanted to dress the mayor in a velvet suit to show off the town's wealth. But the money wasn't enough to pay for a whole suit. So only one sleeve was made that the mayor could hold out the window to maintain the illusion.
The Lord God was so angry at this presumption that he let a nearby spring spew out enormous masses of water, which tumbled to the valley and threatened to flood the city. In their need, the councilors called a monk from the nearby Reinhardsbrunn monastery for help. This referred to the mayor's velvet sleeve and blocked the source with it.
