Built in the 14th century, St Michael's Old Church is the oldest building in Betws-y-Coed and is situated on the banks of the River Conwy. St Michael's Church was replaced by the parish church of St Mary's in 1873 and slumbered peacefully throughout the twentieth century. But by the early 1990s it was in a sorry state, with a leaking roof and associated plaster damage, and was in urgent need of repairs.

In 1994, the Friends of St. Michael's were formed to both raise awareness of the building and raise funds for its preservation. The building has been rented from the Church in Wales since 2000 by the St Michael's Betws-y-Coed Trust, a registered charity run by the Friends.

St Michael's Church in Betws-y-Coed, also known as St Michael's Old Church, is a significant historical building in the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales. Here's a breakdown of what makes it special:

Oldest Building: It is widely considered the oldest building in Betws-y-Coed, dating back to the 14th century. It likely replaced an even earlier prayer building, a "bede house" (or "betws" in Welsh), which gives the village its name.

Evolution: The original medieval church was a simple, rectangular structure. It underwent significant reconstruction in 1843, with additions like a northern chapel and a southern sacristy.

Decline and Restoration: With the growth of Betws-y-Coed as a tourist destination and the construction of the larger St Mary's Church in 1873, St Michael's fell into disuse and disrepair during the 20th century.

Friends of St Michael's: In 1994, the "Friends of St Michael's" was formed to raise awareness and funds for its preservation. The building was declared redundant in 2000 but remains consecrated and is now leased from the Church in Wales by a registered charity run by the Friends.
