A lime tree was planted in the middle of the Raadhuisplein in 1898, which was provided with a spacious circular wrought iron fence. On the pedestal of the gate, under the lion mask, the text reads: In Remembrance of the Ascension to the Throne of H.M. Queen Wilhelmina, offered to the Municipality by the Association "for Fatherland and Orange", August 31, 1898. Hendrik Kramer designed the gate, probably assisted by the heraldist Tiete van der Laars, who worked as a draftsman in his office. The company J. Kroes and Zn. from Leeuwarden carried out the forging work. The decorative fence around the Wilhelmina tree is a characteristic example of a memorial from around the turn of the last century. It fits in with the large series of similar monuments that were erected on the occasion of the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina.
