Born in Barrahûs, Viglius (1507-1577) belonged to a simple family of chieftains, but grew into a renowned intellectual, humanist and diplomat in the sixteenth century.
Viglius van Aytta was born on October 19, 1507 in Barrahus, near Wirdum. He was raised in Leeuwarden by his uncle, the lawyer Bernard Bucho. Van Aytta studied literature and law at universities in Belgium, France and Italy and was a professor in Italy and Germany. He was also friends with Erasmus.
Van Aytta rose to the highest management positions in Europe. He was advisor and right-hand man to Emperor Charles V and Philip II, son of Charles V. He was also president of the Council of State, the Privy Council and chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Such positions were normally only reserved for high European nobility. That a simple Frisian made it this far was therefore highly exceptional.
