Driegoten is an old toponym that refers to the former three inlets, gutters or holes in the Scheldt bank and which had a strategic importance.In the Middle Ages (1583-1585) the "Fortress of Dry Goths", a military construction, would have stood at this location.
During the 'Eighty Years' War - the siege of Dendermonde', out of frustration and anger, the entire military fortress was captured on behalf of Duke of Parma Alexander Farnese and ordered to be demolished.The remote corner in Hamme has been left untouched for centuries.
Only in the 18th century was the substructure rediscovered and used again for construction.
The new destination was “d'herberge op drygotten”.
In the 19th century the entire site was expanded to what it is today. Inns and ferry houses were built on the old foundations of the military fortress. Later these houses became restaurants and without knowing we today enjoy our snack, dish or drink on these historic foundations...
