The town of Pabstleithen (approx. 300 inhabitants), which is located near the border, came under close scrutiny by the German Border Police (DGP) as the border regime tightened in the 1950s. The first forced evictions took place in the 1950s, affecting a total of 57 families by the 1970s. Since a border company was stationed in Pabstleithen and the place was already on the edge of the border, Pabstleithen was preserved with a greatly reduced population.
