The last remaining above-ground remnant of Mannheim's fortifications can be found in Friedrich Lauer's former garden. The red sandstone foundation dates from the period between 1727 and 1739, when the city was walled again after the destruction of 1688/89. Today it is a beautiful park in the middle of the city.
