Tips

  • The Mosquito Hill (Komáří hůrka, 807 m) protrudes like a pick from the Ore Mountains ridge and is therefore easy to see from all directions. At its peak is the Mosquito Tower (Komáří vížka), a very popular mountain hotel with a restaurant (and the charm of the 80s).From here you have a magnificent panoramic view in all directions. To the north you can see over the hilly, gently sloping plateau of the Ore Mountains to the Elbe valley. To the south the Ore Mountains drop steeply, opening up a wide view of the extinct volcanic cones of the Bohemian Central Uplands. To the west the view sweeps along the slightly curved Ore Mountains ridge to beyond the Keilberg (Klínovec). To the east you can see the Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland, the Lusatian Mountains and, if the visibility is reasonably good, the Ještěd near Liberec and the Jizera Mountains. If the visibility is very good, you can see as far as the Giant Mountains.Below the Mosquito Tower lies the old mining town of Krupka (Graupen), which has a mining tradition dating back to the 13th century. The mountain is therefore covered with pits (holes). A very large pit is located right next to the Mosquito Tower. It is a nature reserve. In connection with mining, a stone bell tower was built on the summit in 1568 to announce the start and end of the shift. This was integrated into the pub built in 1857.A chair lift was built from Bohosudov to the summit in 1950-1952. At the time, it was the longest in the world at 2348 m, and today it is still the longest without an intermediate station in the Czech Republic. It overcomes a height difference of 482 m.The name Mückentürmchen or Mückenberg is said to come from an old legend (according to Wikipedia). According to it, a clever cattle thief, when he tried to steal an old woman's only cow, was cursed by her: "You shall be bitten by mosquitoes before you reach the top of the mountain!" And indeed, a huge swarm of mosquitoes appeared and killed the thief. The Mückentürmchen is a very popular destination for both hiking and winter sports.Below the summit is the St. Wolfgang chapel. Unfortunately, this is only open from May to September.

  • The food in the restaurant is homely and delicious - if you're on a tighter budget, you can also have a snack in front of it - but you have to pay in cash!
