    Krems Simandl fountain
Krems Simandl fountain: Monument to an anti-hero!
The women of Krems knew how to assert themselves - long before "half-half", gender and the middle I! So what is the story behind the fountain and its namesake hero? To do this, we have to delve into the realm of legends and find several variants:
    The fact is that...
Simandl brotherhoods existed from 1517 onwards: Siegmund von Dietrichstein, governor of Lower Austria and not only a favourite but also son-in-law of Emperor Maximilian I, founded an association with the aim of moderation and morality among its members. The men were to indulge in less drinking and swear less! As a result, numerous such Simandl brotherhoods were founded in Vienna and Lower Austria, and their headquarters were ultimately in Krems (documented from 1747).
From the Middle Ages onwards, the clichéd literary figure of Siemann, a somewhat heroic man, appears again and again. In the Bavarian-Austrian region, this Siemann became the diminutive form of "Simandl". His counterpart - a very defensive and overly self-confident woman - is therefore quite logically the "Ermann"!
