The church, designed by the well-known church architect Dominikus Böhm, was consecrated in 1935 and rebuilt in a slightly smaller size according to his plans after it was destroyed in the war in 1953-55. The western double-tower façade has been missing since then, and the southern aisle facing Kronprinzenstrasse was not rebuilt either. Instead, the church square in front of the recessed western portal with its wonderful round window was enlarged. Two church bells now stand in the square, while four more have found their place in the new shield façade. The church building has been a listed building since 1993 and, after being deconsecrated, has been used as a cultural center by the ChorForum Essen since 2011.
