In 815, the Franconian settlement of Obermulinheim, as it was then called, was donated by Louis the Pious (son of Charlemagne) to the scholar Einhard. He was a confidant and later biographer of Charlemagne. 600 years earlier, there was already a Roman fort in Seligenstadt, but it has been built over. Roughly in the center of the fort is the Romanesque House, the oldest secular building in Seligenstadt. It was built in 1186-87 in the Romanesque style as a bailiwick. The bailiwick of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (1122-1190) lived here. The two-story stone house has round arches, twin windows and a stepped gable. The Romanesque House is now used for events and weddings.
