In the Middle Ages, Randers was known for its many monasteries, such as the Grey Brothers Monastery on Slotspladsen, but they were all dissolved after the Reformation. This meant that there was no one left to care for the sick, poor and elderly in Randers. Therefore, 500 years ago, the king had a hospital built, ironically named Randers Monastery.
The current buildings are only 150 years old, but their function today is the same as it always has been - caring for the old and weak with old people's apartments and nursing homes. The inscription above the door reads "What is sown in love is reaped in joy".
Right next to Randers Monastery is Randers Monastery Church and its cemetery - which were also never connected to a real monastery, but instead belonged to the old hospital.
