The collection was specifically built up from 1969 onwards. A dedicated area is often referred to as the "Rhododendron Valley".
The focus is on species from the Himalayas and China, the natural center of the genus.
The plants grow in a sheltered hollow with a stream, which creates a favorable microclimate.
