Tips

  • Like almost all distance columns, it consists of seven parts. The base, pedestal and the crown of the pedestal form the substructure. The superstructure consists of an intermediate plate, shaft, coat of arms and tip.

  • The listed Senftenberg distance column is one of the post mile columns that were erected in the Electorate of Saxony by Land and Border Commissioner Adam Friedrich Zürner in the first half of the 18th century on behalf of Elector Friedrich August I of Saxony.

  • The post mile post on the market was erected in 1730. It stood there until 1847, when the Prussian rulers probably didn't like it because it was demolished. Perhaps it was because the ceding of extensive areas of the Kingdom of Saxony to the Kingdom of Prussia made the distance information unusable. We already know that from the pillars in Elsterwerda and Görlitz, which were provided with Prussian miles after 1815. It is also possible that the Saxon-Polish-Lithuanian alliance coat of arms was felt to be outdated in the Prussian monarchy. "After several complaints, the Electoral Saxon distance column was dismantled in 1847 and most of its stones were used as building material". Who ever complained!? The people of Brandenburg deserve a lot of credit for making a replica at their own expense in 2000 and putting it back on the market on October 18, 2000. The salvaged colored piece of coat of arms of the column was preserved as the only remnant and ended up in the district museum of Senftenberg, where it is still located today. That's a bit to smile about: the stumbling block remained.
