At this location you can meet beautiful grazing cattle of the red breed from West Flanders (big butt type). The origin of this breed goes back to the 18th century and was previously also called the Casselse breed. Originally it was a dual purpose breed (milk and meat production) but due to the specialization of agriculture the breed was split into a milk type and a double-billed type.
The red breed, which you can admire here, has now become a protected and endangered cattle breed. The meat from the cattle on these pastures was officially recognized by the 'Vlam' (government) with the label 'Regional product' and is available from quality butchers in Nieuwpoort & Sint-Idesbald Koksijde.
