The Knokkebrug is located on the border of Diksmuide with Lo-Reninge and Houthulst, although the coat of arms of the latter municipality hangs on the railing. It owes its name to the Fort Knocke that the Spaniards built there in 1590 and that was once of great military importance. Today there is a cone-shaped shelter, a rest and information point for cyclists. The drawbridge is located at the confluence of the Yser with the Ieperlee Canal.

The lifting bridge over the Ijzer is right next to the beginning of the canal that connects the Ijzer with Ypres. There is plenty of water in this area, whether flowing or still.
