The building of the 'Cafe Batavia' is located on Fatahillah Square in the old town of Jakarta. It was built in the 1830s by the Dutch and originally served as accommodation for high-ranking officers of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and as an administrative office.
Over the decades, the building changed hands several times and was used for different purposes. In 1991, the 'Cafe Betawi' and the 'Paulo Gallery', an art gallery owned by the Frenchman Paul Hasan, opened. The Australian Graham James restored the building in 1992 to 1993 and opened the 'Cafe Batavia' restaurant.
