The once busy Jalan Kendal Tunnel under Jalan Sudirman with the morning traffic chaos in front of Sudirman station, where hordes of commuters rushed to the offices in the city center, was closed to traffic in early 2019, declared a pedestrian zone and redesigned accordingly. With the new train stations west of Sudirman, 'BNI City' - the terminus to the airport and 'Dukuh Atas BNI MRT Station', the subway that went into operation in March 2019, 'Dukuh Atas' became the most important hub for local public transport in the city center. Today, thousands of commuters use this underpass in the mornings and evenings to get to work.

As part of the 25th anniversary of the city partnership between Jakarta and Berlin, an art project took place in the 'Terowongan Kendal' underpass in July/August 2019. The two well-known street artists Darbotz and Snyder from Jakarta and Berlin designed the north side of the underpass with their so-called "Friendship Mural".
