The two-story south gate was built in 1833 by Minh Mang.
The lower part of the gate has 5 entrances: the middle entrance was reserved for the Emperor, the two left and right of it for the civil and military mandarins. There are also 2 other entrances for e.g. the soldiers and horses.
The upper part of the gate, the pavilion, was used for ceremonial purposes.
