"The Emmericher Ward nature reserve is located on the Lower Lower Rhine, directly on the border with the Netherlands. Due to its location in the flood plain of the Rhine, the area is largely shaped by the water levels of the river. During floods, only the higher areas - the wards - protrude from the water masses.
The Emmericher Ward is a nationally important floodplain area and part of the Lower Lower Rhine International Wetland and EU Bird Sanctuary. In 1985, the 310 hectares of floodplain grassland with remnants of the old Rhine and relatively natural Rhine banks were designated as a nature reserve. The species-rich complex of still waters, silting zones, extensive grassland and gravel banks on the banks of the Rhine plays an important role as a breeding and feeding habitat for rare and endangered waders and water birds, as well as a resting and feeding place for wintering wild geese.
For this reason, the meadows and pastures must be protected. This is the only way to protect the numerous meadow birds will continue to be able to breed. In order to maintain this protection on an ongoing basis, special management contracts are concluded with local farmers.
The area is characterized by near-natural structures of the muddy/sandy river banks and gravel banks, as well as richly structured groyne fields with shallow water zones, sand and mud meadows with their flora and fauna. The lean and dry grassland sites on the high bank of the Rhine are particularly important, with the occurrence of endangered plant species and communities, as well as a nationally significant occurrence of stinging insects such as sand wasps and solitary bees. Since spring 2012, beavers have been regularly present in this area, as can be seen from fresh feeding marks on the Rhine. In addition, the Emmericher Ward is one of the most species-rich dragonfly areas on the Lower Lower Rhine.

The flat summer dike in the area is a landscape element that is characteristic of the Lower Rhine. It played an important role in agriculture here. It kept the summer floods away. The winter flood could pass over the dike and the water brought nutrients into the floodplain. In this way, meadows and floodplain forests near the river were fertilized.
The re-establishment of the floodplain forest is intended to guarantee a suitable habitat for both softwood and hardwood floodplains. The reforestation of the floodplain forest is also intended to re-establish a connection with the remaining floodplain forest on Salmorth and in the Millinger Ward. This will provide the inhabitants of the floodplain forest with a larger habitat. At the same time, it is hoped that the reforestation will lead to the repopulation of numerous species such as the nightingale, various woodpecker species and the grey heron."
