The Molen van 't Dorp or the Verloren Kostmolen, originally stood in the hamlet of Eindeken in Beverlo and dates from 1826. In 1903 it disappeared from the Beverlo landscape to move to Schaffen and was rebuilt in 1906 in the Kerkstraat, where it remained until 1966. was pumped. The mill was well maintained in the first years, but still fell into disrepair.

The city of Diest therefore bought the windmill in 1982, which was protected on September 27, 1979 so that its continued existence would be guaranteed.

The mill was restored by the city of Diest in the period of 2003-2004.

Every first and third Sunday of the month you can visit the mill in operation from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nowadays, they are hardly ever used for their original purpose, but are only technical and historical monuments of a long tradition of craftsmanship: the heavy millstones inside were moved using the power of the wind as the driving force, for example to grind grains into flour (so-called grain mills) or to press oil from fruits (e.g. olives) (so-called oil mills). Occasionally - more on the Dutch coast, but also here at this "polder mill" in the former peat mining area - the function of the windmill was also quite different: it pumped water to a higher level and thus served for drainage.

So these old windmills are the best proof that people were clever enough a whole series of centuries ago - long before the discovery of electricity and the inventions that followed from it - to harness the power of the elements for their own purposes.
