"The Catholic parish church of St. Martini in Emmerich on the Lower Rhine. The building dates back to a previous building that was built from around 1040. The church was damaged several times by the Rhine floods and was subsequently rebuilt and expanded. After considerable destruction in the Second World War, the building was reconstructed in a simplified manner by 1964."

    Patronage: Aldegundis, Martin.

    Order: Collegiate Foundation (men's monastery).

"History (foundation and development up to around 1200):

Originally a mission station founded by the Frisian missionary Willibrord, first called "coenobium" in 914. The convent moved to a new building outside the settlement (1027-54) with the new church of St. Martin (ca. 1040), conspicuously at the time when the relationship between the Xanten monastery and the bishopric of Utrecht broke off.

It was not documented as the seat of an archdeacon of the diocese of Utrecht until 1218. While the archdeacon's seat in Xanten was a central location for the archdiocese of Cologne, Emmerich was for the diocese of Utrecht, although not with a similarly strong influence. A priest who was elected by the foundation capital is first mentioned for the Aldegundis church in 1145. Although there was a real election of the provost for the collegiate foundation as late as the 18th century, it was still necessary to remember that attendance was compulsory on Sundays and public holidays - especially for the dean and the canons (Engels 2006).

Founded before 914, monastery, closed in 1811 (Bönnen / Hirschmann 2006)."
