St. John's Church was built between 1901 and 1905 by city architect Ludwig Winter as the first Protestant church after the Reformation in Braunschweig. The church, built in the neo-Gothic style, is 37 m long and 25 m wide in the transept. Its floor plan is almost in the shape of a Greek cross. The masonry was faced with limestone. However, limestone blocks were used for the building corners, the buttresses, cornices and the window tracery. The 65 m high tower, which partially burned down in 1945, was built on the northeast corner of the church for urban planning reasons.
