The Church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris, nestled on Philopappos Hill en route to Pnyka and the Monument of Philopappou, is a beloved Athens landmark.

Dating back to the 9th century, this vaulted basilica has ancient ruins, such as altar columns. Its unique name, meaning 'Saint Demetrius the Bombardier,' stems from a providential incident in 1658 when divine intervention saved the church from bombardment. Architect Dimitrios Pikionis restored the church in 1955 and uncovered stunning 16th-century meta-Byzantine artwork during the process.
