The keystone was ceremoniously installed on July 23, 1859. The entire bridge was decorated with wreaths, foliage and many white and blue flags. The ceremonial inauguration of the railway line took place on Sunday, August 12, 1860. Countless trains have rolled over the viaduct since then, and it is to be hoped that many more will follow. The Second World War showed that even such an impressive structure was not built to last forever. During the Allied air raids on Traunstein, several bombs narrowly missed the bridge, and a few days later a Wehrmacht engineer unit had already prepared to blow it up. A few brave citizens of Traunstein were able to prevent this at the risk of their lives, shortly before the Americans occupied the town without resistance. Otherwise Traunstein would be poorer today for a landmark.
