Where does the name "Wawel" come from? According to linguists, we should understand this word as a dry, elevated place among waters and marshes. It fits like a glove, because the topography of this area actually looked like this in the past. It was a limestone hill, at the foot of which were the Vistula River floodplains, as well as marshes and bogs. The name Wawel first appeared in written sources in the 13th century. In addition to the most familiar spelling, Wąwel and Wonwel were also used.
