The fountain was created in 1672 by Hans-Philipp Langenhan. The figure on the fountain column represents John the Baptist. In his hand he is holding a book with a lamb on it. The depiction refers to the Gothic parish church of St. John nearby, which is well worth seeing.
The John Fountain served as a public drinking water fountain for a long time. In the past, water was also collected in the fountain box for the breweries.
