In the early 1800s, Tansley was part of the Parish of Crich and did not have a church of its own, although there was a Methodist Church in the village. The people of Tansley were tired of trudging to Crich for Sunday services so in 1839 they had begun raising money for a chapel of their own and building started.

Stone was transported from the local Fox Holes and Knowle quarries. The chapel, still part of the Parish of Crich was opened the following year in 1840 and in 1844 the Parish of Tansley was formed.
