There has been a level crossing on the Nemelaer Estate since the construction of the railway in 1865. The then owner of the estate, Donatus Alberic van den Bogaerde van Terbrugge, was not satisfied with his estate being cut through by the new railway line. He filed a lawsuit and received substantial compensation. In order to access the closed part of his estate, a separate transition was made for the lord. The story goes that he even had the privilege of stopping the train. A servant would then warn the driver by waving a red flag.
