Munkmarsch Harbor

The small port of Munkmarsch is an exceptional feature. Believe it or not, this used to be the main traffic port on the island of Sylt. Here was the central landing and docking point for those ferries that came from the Danish city of Hoyer and also left there. Before the Hindenburgdamm was opened in 1927, all tourists who wanted to go to Sylt had to travel to Munkmarsch. Most of the visitors then traveled by horse-drawn carriage and later on the island railway to Westerland and from there to their holiday home in Sylt. The port facility is still in use today, but only for sailboats that are used privately. Leisure skippers can take long sailing tours across the North Sea from the port of Munkmarsch - the prerequisite for this, however, is the high tide, which must be present both when leaving and when landing.
