Along with St. Martin's Church, Roland is one of Halberstadt's landmarks. Carved from sandstone in 1433, it was erected on the west façade of the town hall.

It represents the market, coinage, and customs rights granted to the city by Otto III as early as 989. In 1367, Halberstadt became a member of the Hanseatic League, thus representing freedom of trade for the bourgeoisie ever since.

After the Roland in Bremen, it is the second oldest Roland statue in all of Germany.

Both statues were created by stonemasons from Parlau in Bohemia and bear similarities.

His shield is adorned with a double-headed imperial eagle. In his right hand, he holds his double-edged sword, the "Durendal."

His ceremonial belt is inscribed with script and the year 1433.

The Halberstadt Roland is the meeting point for public guided tours and a popular starting point for exploring the city.
