The inner canal of the Acueducto das Águas Livres (Free Water Aqueduct) is a key work of Lisbon's hydraulic heritage.
Built between 1731 and 1799 by order of King John V, it largely follows the route of an ancient Roman aqueduct.
In its monumental section over the Alcântara Valley, 35 arches stand out, including the largest stone arch—65 meters high and with a span of 29–32 meters—the largest hand-built stone arch in the world.
