It is located in an open field, just outside the village of Wachendorf: The high, asymmetrical tower of this chapel, built on private initiative and designed by the Swiss architect Zumthor, rises clearly into the sky above the Eifel landscape. The sacred space is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Flüe (after the town of Flüeli in the Swiss canton of Obwalden), but he is far better known by the simple name he used himself, "Brother Klaus". He lived from 1417 to 1487 and is revered as a hermit, mystic and peacemaker. Brother Klaus's memorial day in the calendar of saints is March 21 (the day of his death). He is the national saint of Switzerland.
