"The Groote Heide is a 247 hectare nature reserve in the municipality of Venlo. It is located between the city of Venlo and the border with Germany. On the German side, the wooded and water-rich landscape of the Krickenbecker Lakes directly adjoins the nature reserve. Characteristic of the Groote Heide is the diverse landscape consisting of heathland, fields, pastures and sandy grassland. Coniferous and mixed forests occur particularly in the south.

The area was used for agriculture (sheep grazing) for centuries. During World War II it served as an airport. After World War II, the area continued to be used for military purposes, preserving the open character of the area. After the military withdrew, the Groote Heide was designated as a nature reserve and transferred to the Stichting Limburgs Landschap by the city of Venlo. Today's use serves to preserve the flora and fauna that are very characteristic of heaths and sandy grasslands. The Groote Heide is the remnant of a heathland landscape that was extensive in the Napoleonic period in the Venlo/Nettetal border region. On the German side, however, the heath areas were reforested and only the names such as Hinsbecker-, Venloer-, Heronger-, Leuther- and Plankenheide remind us of the former use of the heath..."

Very beautiful hiking area. The heath is still brown at the moment, but it's sunny.
