The Hennebrunnen was the only one of the city's 21 running fountains that survived the great city fire of 1752. This fire devastated almost all of Ilmenau, after which Ilmenau was completely redesigned and finally built by the state architect of the House of Saxony.
Standing on a stone mountain, the heraldic animal of the Counts of Henneberg bubbles water from its raised beak into a copper bowl. The hen holds the Saxon coat of arms with its claws.
