For almost 60 years, the doves of peace at the bridgehead of the Old Town Bridge have been a natural part of the cityscape. With the pictures from Ukraine, the "world peace" ball against the backdrop of the Albrechtsburg Castle takes on a new meaning: the sculpture was erected on May 7, 1965, the eve of the 20th anniversary of the liberation from fascism. "That was also the reason for its construction," says city archivist Tom Lauerwald about the globe, which, with the doves of peace circling around it in a filigree wrought iron construction, is a symbol of world peace. The metalwork was carried out by the Bergmann metalworking shop from Dresden.

The design for the metalwork was provided by Elfriede Reichel-Drechsler, a native of Dresden. The painter and sculptor who immortalized herself with a water feature in the Dresdner Strasse residential area in Coswig. In Meissen, the globe sits on a pedestal made of red Meissen granite. (SZ)

Here, at the bridgehead on the right bank of the Elbe, the destruction caused by the explosions shortly before the end of World War II in 1945 was particularly evident. Twenty years after the end of the war, the globe with the doves circling it was erected here as a symbol of peace.
