Lock 33, like all of the 100 locks on the Ludwig Canal, has the typical standard dimensions. It consists of castle sandstone, is 34.15 meters long, 4.67 meters wide and has a drop of 2.30 to 3.20 meters. A complete filling of the chamber requires up to 500 cubic meters of water. To save money, some of the canal's locks could be shortened to 26.2 meters with an intermediate gate. This length was then sufficient for the 24 meter long, normal barges. The entire length of the lock chamber was only required for transporting logs. A complete smuggling took 10 to 15 minutes. Belonging to the lock is a lock keeper's house, which was later converted and today (2020) serves as a residential building.[2]The lock has two double-leaf wooden mortise gates and has been functional again since the mid-2000s. An information board on the history of the canal and the lock was erected at the head.[3]Together with lock 32 at Sengenthal, it delimits the 24-kilometre-long crown section of the Ludwig Canal, which crosses the main European watershed. It also forms the beginning of a chain of locks on the northern flank of the canal that runs as far as Nuremberg.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanalschleuse_33
