The sandstone gorge is worth a visit at any time of the year. In summer it is covered with lush greenery, in winter it presents impressive icicles. Whether warm or cold, the paths here require concentration and surefootedness - otherwise there is a risk of slipping or a wet foot. Various legends tell how the gorge got its name. Perhaps a devil once went down here with a sinful knight to hell. Or maybe there was a witches dance place here once.

  • Teufelskirche is a gorge in the Rähtsandstein and an adventure playground in a "mystical world". The path through the gorge leads in some places over wooden bridges or stone blocks to get anywhere. Sometimes you sink into the mud up to your ankles, waterproof footwear is advisable and good sure-footedness is necessary. At the end of the gorge, a small waterfall flows down the sandstone layers. At the waterfall, stairs lead into the gorge and an information board has been installed.

  • The Teufelskirche is a gorge in the Rähtsandstein. There are various legends about the origins of the Devil's Church. One of them goes like this:

When, during a hunt, the riflemen stood near the ravine where the hares were being driven, not a single rifleman met. Whenever someone pulled the trigger, the barrel of the gun was driven crazy by an unknown hand.

At last a hunter noticed how a dark figure with claws from the sleeve of its coat nudged the barrel of an aiming shooter. He made a noise, all the hunters were now aiming at the devil, who fell into the cauldron in his fear and, when he saw himself being followed, drove into the rock wall with thunder-like crashes and hurled the pieces out as they were still there.

According to another legend, a godless knight was brought from the nearby Thann Castle by the devil while hunting. It is said to have been his sacrilege to have chased a deer in the impassable terrain on Good Friday, despite the pastor's warning.

It is difficult to decide who is right. This gorge is definitely mystical.

  • Untold millennia, the front Schwarzach makes its way through the mysterious and mystical valley between Prackenfels and Grünsberg. Legends and myths have always seemed to define people's lives here, as evidenced by the extraordinary names such as Devil's Grave, Devil's Cave and the Devil's Church.

  • Definitely sturdy shoes that can get dirty too! Some roads are very muddy and you should generally walk well for the way through the gorge. Slipping! The first of the many bridges is unfortunately broken (as of 02/09/2019) and is hopefully repaired! Here you have to walk through the riverbed. Otherwise a really magical place! Like in a fantasy movie! It is advisable to plan a tour with the Sophia spring, then you visited 2 very fascinating places in succession.
