The Eschenkar am Lämmerbach was a meadow valley used by farmers, which was reforested with spruce trees after it was abandoned for agricultural use. In the 1980s, the middle Eschenkar was converted into a wetland. The now 60 to 80 year old spruce trees and other trees were removed so that the moor could develop well thanks to the increased incidence of light. The Society for Nature Conservation and Floodplain Development (GNA) maintains and promotes the wetland together with the city of Bad Orb.
Ponds support amphibians such as the common frog and insects such as the striated spring damsel. Small structures such as stone walls and piles of wood offer reptile species such as the endangered adder and many other small animals important hiding places, favorable sunbathing areas, egg-laying areas and winter quarters.
