The castle complex, first mentioned in 1436, the creation of which must probably be seen in connection with Grüningen's elevation to the status of a town (between 1397 and 1410), is located in the west of the old town center. It is a former moated castle integrated into the area of the city's floor plan, which was apparently started at the same time as the city's fortifications from 1410, i.e. during the Falkenstein rule, and was completed under their heirs, the brothers Gottfried and Eberhard von Eppstein. Some remnants of the Gothic castle, which was formerly secured by moats (Solms-Braunfels property), which became a ruin during the Thirty Years' War and a city fire in 1634, have been preserved.

Unfortunately, visits are only possible irregularly because the entrance has a lockable door, which was locked when we visited.
