During Operation Market Garden, the bombing of Ede to stop the German occupying forces, Lieutenant Robert N. Greene was engaged in an attack on German anti-aircraft guns. His unit was supporting the airborne landings at Arnhem (Operation Market Garden).

During attacks on the German guns, his fighter pilot caught fire. His Republic P-47D Thunderbolt of the 353rd Fighter Group of the US Air Force crashed in a meadow near Wekerom. A memorial plaque has now been erected in his honor opposite this location. The young man was only 20 years old.
