The three floors tell the story of the Holocaust and the Kazerne Dossin, starting from the Belgian context, anti-Semitism, the German occupation and collaboration. The persecution of the Jews is discussed from the perspective of both the victims and the perpetrators. Aid to the victims will also have its place. The story invites the visitor to reflect on racism, exclusion and the mechanisms that led to the genocide. On the top floor there is room for temporary exhibitions, which are given a broader interpretation. For example, there are art and photo exhibitions related to human rights

Spread over the floors, on the end wall is a wall with thousands of photos of Jews, in black and white and in color to commemorate the deportees. The photos in black and white concern the dead. There are only color photos here and there. There are places on the wall of people of which one has hardly any information. If family comes through the information center with questions or information, this wall is sometimes added to.

A new building was designed by Bob Van Reeth's architectural firm AWG for the expansion of the museum, opposite the old Kazerne Dossin. The building is conceived as a monument against forgetting. Not a sculpture or Holocaust memorial loaded with references, but a compact building as a "thinking mold", a benchmark for memory. The windows were bricked up with 25,267 bricks, symbolizing the number of deportees. At the top is a terrace overlooking the courtyard of the old barracks, the gathering place for the deportees.

Kazerne Dossin is a memorial, museum and documentation center about the Holocaust and human rights in the Belgian town of Mechelen. During the Second World War, in 1942-1944, the German occupiers used the Dossin Barracks as a collection camp for Belgian Jews, Roma and Sinti.

This museum was built to explain to current and future generations the historical significance of this place and to illustrate themes such as racism, exclusion and human rights. The combination of the historical story of the Holocaust in Belgium with the theme of human rights makes Kazerne Dossin a unique project.

The unique museum was designed by top architect and former Flemish master builder bOb Van Reeth.

The Kazerne Dossin is an impressive museum about the Second World War and at the same time a memorial center for the Holocaust. During the war, around 25,000 people were taken from this barracks to their deaths in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The original barracks no longer exist, but a new building was built on the same site where you can learn more about what exactly happened during the war.

Attention is also paid to themes such as racism and human rights. Inside the museum, objects and documents from the Second World War are exhibited and stories and testimonies about the persecutions of the Jews are also told. More information at kazernedossin.eu/NL
