Raised bogs are much rarer in Switzerland than flat bogs. Drainage and peat mining have caused over 90% of the former raised bogs to disappear. The site conditions are even more extreme than on the fens. In raised bogs, the majority of the water comes from precipitation and is therefore very poor in nutrients. Only very few - but very rare - species can withstand these conditions. Characteristic species are peat mosses. If they die, peat remains. The next generation grows on top. Intact raised bogs therefore slowly grow in height.
