Bogs form when the ground is constantly saturated with water. In the case of fens, it is usually slope and groundwater. Organic soils form on such wet sites because humus degradation is greatly reduced. Only species that are adapted to these specific site conditions occur.Various species of orchids, such as blood-red orchid, onion orchid or marsh orchid but also the beautifully flowering fever clover are attractive species in this now rare habitat. The fluffy inflorescences of the cotton grass, which also occurs, add splashes of white color to the landscape in summer. To prevent fens from growing into wet forests, regular litter cutting or extensive grazing is necessary.
