The castle is gigantic. It is not open to the public. In winter there is a Christmas market with admission.

Located south of Regensburg's Old Town is St. Emmeram Castle, the residence of Princess Gloria of Thurn and Taxis. With well over 500 rooms, it is the largest privately inhabited castle. The magnificent complex originated from the extensive building complex of one of Germany's largest Benedictine monasteries, the Imperial Abbey of St. Emmeram. The oldest parts date back to the 12th century. As part of the nationalization of the Thurn and Taxis Post Office, the Princely House received the monastery complex as part of the compensation from the Kingdom of Bavaria. The subsequent 100-year renovation phase created the current ancestral residence of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis.

Originally a Benedictine monastery dating back to the 8th century, it became the main residence of the Thurn and Taxis family after the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1808.

The palace is one of the largest private palaces in Europe and houses valuable tapestries, paintings and stately furniture.

Visitors can visit the Marstall Museum and the Princely Treasury, which offer insights into the history and life of the Thurn and Taxis family.
