Helsinki Central Station is a well-known landmark and the center of public transport in the greater Helsinki area.
Rautatientori metro station, located beneath the train station, is the busiest station on the Helsinki metro. Trains to St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia also departed from Helsinki Central Station. Train service to St. Petersburg ended on March 28, 2022; the train service to Moscow had already been stopped earlier.
The railway tracks in Helsinki were built in the 1860s. The granite-clad station building was designed by Eliel Saarinen and inaugurated in 1919. The building is known for its bell tower and the Lyhdynkantajat (“The Lantern Bearers”) statues by Emil Wikström.
