Just three weeks after Alfred Krupp's death, on August 5, 1887, the Essen city council decided to erect a monument to the deceased. The bronze figure, created by Fritz Schaper on behalf of the city of Essen, is 2.6 meters high and stands on a stone base. The monument was ceremoniously unveiled on July 14, 1889, the second anniversary of Alfred Krupp's death, with Mayor Erich Zweigert describing the monument as a sign of gratitude from the citizens of the city of Essen in his speech. This is evidenced by the inscription "The grateful fatherland" on the back of the base. The statue shows Alfred Krupp in his preferred riding suit for everyday life. He was known in Essen on horseback when he rode along the dirt road between his home, Villa Hügel, and the cast steel factory, the Alfredstraße, which is now named after him as part of the federal highway 224. The monument shows his left hand with his hat pressed together, placed on his hip, his right hand resting on an anvil half covered with a fur apron.

"He was the Krupp that the following generations emulated: Alfred Krupp (1812 to 1887) made the company and the name Krupp great. At first he employed seven workers, by the time of his death there were more than 20,000 "Kruppians". "

The statue of the Essen industrialist at the Marktkirche has been moved more often than any other in Germany. The place is atmospheric for a city center, but suffers from its marginal audience.

This monument has had a tough life; perhaps no other statue in Germany has been removed and moved more often than the bronze Alfred Krupp. It was erected in 1889 on the initiative of the citizens and the council directly at the Marktkirche, the central historical square in Essen's city center. The actual founder of the cast steel factory had died two years earlier, and he had a life's work to show for it that had made a decisive contribution to Essen's development.
