In the south-west of the old Segeroth cemetery is a grave memorial for the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.
54 Essen soldiers fell in battles at the front. Of these, 17 warriors who died as a result of their wounds in Essen's military hospitals were buried here in a common crypt based on the decision of the Kirchhofs-Commission on September 6, 1870. The funerary monument was given a listing of names and places of origin, as well as major battles, on the sides of the monument. With a parade from the town hall, the participants, accompanied by a music corps, went to the grave site. The memorial was unveiled on September 2, 1874, Sedantag, after a choir song and the speech of the first deputy Karl König, accompanied by cannon shots and music. After another song and a silent prayer, they marched back into town.
